Portal das Finanças Login 2026: Get and Recover Your Password

The Portal das Finanças is the website of the Autoridade Tributária e Aduaneira (AT — the Portuguese tax and customs authority). It is where you file your IRS (income tax) return, issue recibos verdes (freelancer receipts), pay taxes and check invoices. For the Portal das Finanças login, you need your NIF (tax number) and a way to authenticate.

Ways to log in to the Portal das Finanças

If you do not have a NIF yet, start by getting your NIF.

How to get your Portal das Finanças password for the first time

1. Go to portaldasfinancas.gov.pt and click “Registar-se” (register).
2. Fill in your NIF and the other details the form asks for.
3. If asked, set a security question and answer — they will help you recover the password.
4. Submit the request.
5. The password is sent by post to your domicílio fiscal (tax address — the address registered with Finanças). The Portal das Finanças does not give a delivery time.
6. Log in with your NIF and the password you received, and change it if the portal asks you to.

Important: before you request it, check that your tax address is correct. If the address is out of date, the letter goes to the wrong place.

How to log in with Chave Móvel Digital

1. On the portal, click Iniciar Sessão (log in).
2. Choose the Chave Móvel Digital tab (or “Autenticação.gov”).
3. Enter your mobile number and CMD PIN.
4. Enter the security code received by SMS or in the app.

How to recover your Finanças password

There are three situations:

1. You remember the security question — use the password recovery option on the login screen and follow the steps.

2. You have a Cartão de Cidadão or Chave Móvel Digital — log in with one of these methods and look on the portal for the option to change the password. If you cannot find it, use the Portal das Finanças help page.

3. You do not remember the question and have neither CC nor CMD — official AT procedure:

1. From the email registered with the AT, send a message to portal-senhas@at.gov.pt.
2. Subject: “Cancelamento de senha NIF” followed by your NIF.
3. In the body: NIF, full name and tax address.
4. Wait for confirmation of the cancellation.
5. Go back to the portal, click “Registar-se” and request a new password — it arrives by letter at your tax address.

If you have no registered email or do not know which one it is, you must go to a Serviço de Finanças (tax office) to update the email. If you have an urgent tax obligation, you can ask there for a “senha na hora” (instant password).

Main Portal das Finanças services

• IRS: file your tax return, check refunds (see also IRS Jovem).
• e-Fatura: validate invoices for IRS deductions.
• Recibos verdes: open self-employed activity and issue invoice-receipts (faturas-recibo).
• Payments: get payment references for IUC (vehicle tax), IMI (property tax) and other taxes.
• Certificates: tax address certificate and certificate of tax compliance (“não dívida” — no debt).
• Personal details: change address, email and IBAN for refunds.

Common problems and mistakes

• “Senha inválida” (invalid password) after several attempts: access may be blocked temporarily; do not keep trying, use recovery.
• The letter never arrived: check your tax address; if it is wrong, change it at a Serviço de Finanças and request again.
• Address outside Portugal: check the tax representative rules and whether your address is registered correctly.
• Old email you cannot access: only a Serviço de Finanças can update it.
• Portal slow during IRS season: log in outside peak hours.
• Fake emails or SMS “from Finanças”: the AT does not ask for passwords by email. Always log in by typing the portal address yourself.
