Social Security Login Portugal: Segurança Social Direta 2026
What is Segurança Social Direta?
Segurança Social Direta (SSD) is your personal online area at Segurança Social (Portugal’s social security), inside the seg-social.pt portal. It lets you check your contributions, apply for benefits and handle almost everything without going to a service desk.
To log in you need your NISS (social security number) — if you do not have it yet, see how to get a NISS.
Social Security login (Segurança Social Direta): how to sign in
The Portugal social security login is the Segurança Social Direta login on seg-social.pt. In short:
- Type seg-social.pt in your browser and click Iniciar sessão (log in).
- Pick one way to sign in: NISS + password, Chave Móvel Digital or Cartão de Cidadão (the last two through Autenticação.gov).
- No password yet? Register with your NISS and date of birth, get the verification code by email, SMS or letter, and choose Ativar conta to set your password (steps below).
- Problems? See the common login errors further down or call the Linha Segurança Social (210 545 400 / 300 502 502, working days 9am to 6pm).
How to log in to Segurança Social Direta
There are three ways to authenticate:
| Login method | What you need | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| NISS + password | Prior registration and verification code | People without Chave Móvel Digital |
| Chave Móvel Digital | Phone with an active CMD and PIN | Most people — it is the fastest |
| Cartão de Cidadão | Card, card reader and PIN | Portuguese citizens with a reader on their computer |
With Chave Móvel Digital you do not need to create a Segurança Social password: just choose Autenticação.gov on the login screen.

Login problems: common errors
“I’m not receiving the verification code.” The code is only sent if your contacts exist and are up to date in the system. For security, the portal does not show which contacts you have registered. If they are wrong, update them through the Linha Segurança Social (helpline 210 545 400 / 300 502 502, working days from 9am to 6pm) or at a service desk.
“I only see the option by letter.” This means you have no email or mobile registered. The code goes to the address Segurança Social has — if you moved, update your address first. Faster alternative: activate Chave Móvel Digital.
“My password has expired.” SSD passwords are valid for a period and must be renewed. Follow the instructions on screen or request a new code.
“I forgot my password.” On the login screen, use the password recovery option to request a new verification code and set a new password. If you cannot find it, call the Linha Segurança Social.
“It says my NISS is not valid.” Check the 11 digits. If your NISS was given recently (foreigners), it may not yet be active for registration — contact the Linha Segurança Social.
“I logged in with CMD but I can’t see my data.” This can happen if your NIF and NISS are not linked to each other. Contact Segurança Social to correct your identification.
Security tips
- Segurança Social never asks for bank details or codes through links in SMS or email.
- Always log in by typing seg-social.pt in your browser.
- Your password is personal: do not share it with employers or middlemen. If you need someone to handle something for you, use a power of attorney or the PA-12 declaration.
Frequently asked questions
How long does the code take to arrive by letter?
According to Segurança Social, as a rule up to 8 working days, to the address registered in the system. By email or SMS it is much faster.
Can I log in without requesting a password?
Yes. You can log in with Chave Móvel Digital or with the Cartão de Cidadão and a card reader, through the Autenticação.gov option.
I have a foreign mobile number. Will I receive the code?
Segurança Social says the code can be sent to a foreign mobile number, as long as it is correctly registered in the system.
I forgot my password. What do I do?
You can request a new verification code at any time and set a new password, or log in with Chave Móvel Digital.
Does Segurança Social send links by SMS asking for my details?
No. Segurança Social does not ask for bank details or access codes through links in SMS or email. Messages like that are scam attempts.
