Portugal Residence Permit Renewal at AIMA 2026: Online Guide
Most Portugal residence permit renewals are now done online at AIMA (Agência para a Integração, Migrações e Asilo — Agency for Integration, Migration and Asylum). This short guide shows who can renew online, the steps and the most common problem. You usually do not need an AIMA appointment if you can use the online portal.
Who can renew online
| Situation | Where |
|---|---|
| Permit ending between 1/7/2025 and 31/1/2027 | Online — Renewals Portal |
| Permit (not ARI) expired between 22/2/2020 and 30/6/2025 | Online — services.aima.gov.pt |
| ARI (golden visa) expired between 22/2/2020 and 31/1/2027 | Online — Renewals Portal |
| Permit ending after 31/1/2027 | Wait until the portal opens for that month |
| Change of type (e.g. study → work) | In person / change request |
Current window (25/10/2026): according to the official portal, it accepts renewals of residence permits ending between 1 July 2025 and 31 January 2027, and of ARI (golden visa) permits expired from 22 February 2020 until 31 January 2027. See the news item (in Portuguese).
How to log in to the AIMA Renewals Portal
You log in to portal-renovacoes.aima.gov.pt with an account created on the portal itself. It does not use Chave Móvel Digital. The portal is available in Portuguese and English.
- Create an account — the first time, choose «Criar Conta» (Create Account) and follow the registration. You will need an email and your residence card number, which are asked for at login.
- Sign in — next time, enter email + residence card (título de residência) number + password.
- Recover your password — if you forgot it, use «Recuperar Password» on the login page.
Common login errors:
- Using a different email from the one used to create the account.
- Entering the wrong number: the portal asks for the residence card number, not your NIF, NISS or passport number.
- Trying to sign in with Chave Móvel Digital or your Portal das Finanças credentials — they do not work here.
- Having a permit outside the window the portal accepts (see next section).
What if my permit expired before July 2025?
According to the official portal, renewals (other than ARI) of permits that expired between 22 February 2020 and 30 June 2025 are not done on the Renewals Portal but at services.aima.gov.pt.

Contacting AIMA
AIMA’s Contact Centre is +351 217 115 000, working days 8:00–20:00, and the general email is geral@aima.gov.pt. Head office: Av. António Augusto de Aguiar, 20, 1069-119 Lisboa. There is also an online AIMA Contact Form (contactenos.aima.gov.pt); to change the address on a renewal, choose «Portal de Renovações > Comunicar/retificar morada». Store addresses and hours are in the Residence permit guide.
Step by step: AIMA residence permit renewal online
- Check on the portal whether your expiry month is already open.
- Go to portal-renovacoes.aima.gov.pt.
- Fill in your details and upload the documents (list below).
- Pay the fee shown on the portal (amounts in the AIMA fee table).
- Keep the proof of submission — it shows that your application is in progress.
Usual documents
The portal shows the documents needed in your case. The most common are:
- Valid passport
- Current título de residência (residence card)
- NIF (tax number) and NISS (social security number)
- Proof of means of subsistence (employment contract, payslips, IRS tax return)
- Proof of address
- Tax and social security situation in order
Common problem: NISS blocks the application
Many applications get blocked because the NISS details do not match. Before you submit, check on Segurança Social Direta (the Social Security online portal) that your NISS is active and has the same details as your passport. See also NISS in Portugal and Segurança Social Direta.
Frequently asked questions
Can I renew if my residence card has already expired?
Yes, online. If it expired between 22 February 2020 and 30 June 2025, use services.aima.gov.pt; if it ends between 1 July 2025 and 31 January 2027, use the Renewals Portal. For other dates, check with AIMA (217 115 000).
My application has said 'Em análise' (under review) for months. Is that normal?
Many people report delays. Keep your proof of submission, which shows that your application is pending, and contact AIMA through the official channels.
I finished my course and started working. Do I just renew?
No. You should ask to change the type of residence permit, not do a simple renewal on the portal.
I forgot my AIMA portal password. What do I do?
On the Renewals Portal login page choose «Recuperar Password» (Recover Password) and follow the steps. Login asks for your email, residence card number and password.
Can I log in to the AIMA Renewals Portal with Chave Móvel Digital?
No. The Renewals Portal does not use Chave Móvel Digital: you sign in with email, residence card number and the password of an account created on the portal itself.
How do I change my address on a renewal application?
Use the AIMA Contact Form and choose the option «Portal de Renovações > Comunicar/retificar morada» (report/correct address).
